The standard set of verses.
The Extended Memory collection is a collection of long passages and entire books of the Bible.
The Legacy collection is the original Fighter Verses collection before it was revised in 2011. The Legacy collection remains substantially similar to the new Fighter Verses collection. The most noteable difference between the two collections is that the entire year 5 of the Legacy collection is the sermon on the mount (Matthew 5-7). To use the Legacy collection instead of the Fighter Verses collection you must go to Preferences and select it as your preferred collection.
The Foundation Verses are verses targeted at young children. Press the "About" button in the Foundation Verses section for more information.
The "Current Verse" button provides a way to quickly navigate to the verse that is scheduled for this week in the schedule. The schedule can be configured in Preferences.
You can add any verse that you would like using My Verses. This allows you to add verses that are not part of the Fighter Verses collection. You can also enter topics or "tags" for the verses you add. "Tags" allow you to associate any sort of label with a verse. These could be used to categorize verses, to assign topics, or to mark them somehow. The list of tags and the verse associated with them is accessible under the "Topical Index / Tags" button on the main menu.
The verses that you mark as memorized (by touching the "Memorized?" button) are the ones that available in under "Review Memorized Verses". The app will schedule review for each verse based on when you memorized it and when you last reviewed it. The current behavior is:
The verses that you mark as memorized are the ones that available in under "Review Memorized Verses". All the screens with lists of verses will show a checkmark on the right side for any verses that are memorized; this allows you to quickly scan and see which verses you know and which ones you can still learn.
The quizzes help you to learn verses through repetition and increasing difficulty. Each quiz has 5 levels of difficulty. With each progressive lvel more words are taken away. At level 5 all words are taken away. There are three quiz styles. Each quiz style has different strengths.
To use the Quick Blanks quiz, recite the verse in your head (or out loud) and touch the screen to reveal each blank after you pass it in your recitation so you can check your accuracy. Strength: can be completed very quickly. Weakness: answers are not verifible.
Choose the correct word for each blank by selecting it from a large list. The quiz is not complete until you have answered every blank correctly. Strength: answers are verifible; limited number of answers makes it possible to guess. Weakness: possibility of guessing the correct answer means you can complete the quiz without absolutely knowing the answers.
Type in the correct word for each blank. The quiz is not complete until you have answered every blank correctly. Strength: answers are verifible; no guessing. Weakness: most time-consuming
Creates an image that has a colored background with the verse text overlaid on it. By setting this image to be your "lock screen" you can ensure that you are constantly reminded of God's word and reminded to memorize. This is a great way to keep yourself from forgetting or getting off track with your memorization goals. The color of the background is randomly generated because you are encouraged to use different colors each time; this helps prevent the image from becoming so familiar so that you stop noticing it. The image is not intended to be used as the "home screen", only as the "lock screen".
Spoken verse audio is available for the ESV translation. The audio loops continually so that through repetition you can become familiar with the text. Listening to the audio is a great way to memorize when you can't look at the device, like when driving, walking, running, etc. Max McLean is the speaker. If the passage includes more than a single verse (like a reference like Phil 2:4-6 for example) you have the option of listening to just a single verse at a time (like verse 4) instead of the entire passage. This feature requires an internet connection; however after the audios is downloaded it will be saved for a while so it can be played back instantly even while offline
Songs are written and recorded each week for the current verse in the Fighter Verses collection. The songs use the exact words from the ESV translation. Songs have a special way of working themselves into our memory, so they make great aids for memorization. Songs are available for the current verse (following the default schedule) and for all prior weeks. The song is usually posted in the beginning of the week, but is not always available immediately with the new verse. This feature requires an internet connection; however after the song is downloaded it will be saved for a while so it can be played back instantly even while offline.
Understanding the context in which a verse is placed is extremely important in order to understand what the verse really means. The "Read whole chapter" button gives you quick and easy access to read the verse in it's context so that you can gain a deeper understanding. This feature requires an internet connection.
Every week a new blog post is written to accompany the new "current verse" in the Fighter Verses collection (following the default schedule). The blog post is a short commentary that provides deeper study into the meaning behind the verse and it's application. The freshness of this commentary makes the blog a particularly attractive resource. Blogs are usually posted in the beginning of the week, but are not always available immediately with the new verse. This feature requires an internet connection.
Increase your understanding of the verse and the depth of meaning by studying a commentary. Commentary is provided by the PocketSword app which has a huge number of resources available for download. If you don't know where to start, we recommend the following resources in particular: John Calvin's commentaries, Matthew Henry's Complete Commentary, and John Gill's Exposition of the Whole Bible
Searches DesiringGod.org for sermons and other resources by Dr. John Piper that are related to the verse. This is a great way to go deeper in studying a verse. For some verses you may want to enter a more general verse reference to search for in order to find matching resources (like just the book and chapter). This feature requires an internet connection.
This allows you to quickly switch between the same week in the Fighter Verses collection and the Extended Memory collection so that you can memorize one verse a week in BOTH collections if you wish to. This is useful for people that want a greater challenge than one verse a week offers.
Choose your preferred translation. This is the translation that will be used to display all the verses in the app.
The "Current Verse Settings" allow you change the starting point for the memorization schedule. The Fighter Verses are designed so that you memorize one new verse a week, starting with the first verse in Set 1 of the Fighter Verses collection. This is customizable primary to support churches or other groups that want to memorize together and follow the same schedule. However, there are advantages to following the default schedule (which has Set 1 starting on Jan 3, 2011): 1) the new FighterVerses.com blog posts and the Fighter Verse Songs are always related to the current verse in the default schedule; so if your schedule is ahead of the default schedule you won't be able to take advantage of these resources. This setting affects the behavior of the "Current Verse" button and the display of dates on the verse-list screen and on the "to recite on" date on the verse screen.
If you choose Daily or Weekly, then the Fighter Verses app will subtley remind you to memorize or review by adding a number "1" red badge on the app icon, just like the unread email count appears. If you choose Weekly, this functions more as an indicator that a new verse is now "current" and that you should look at it and begin memorizing. If you choose Daily, then this is a reminder to continue working on the current verse and to review your memorized verses.
