Fighter Verses Collection

The Fighter Verses Collection was the original compilation of verses introduced in 1997 and revised in 2011. This five-year memory program is broken down into five yearly sets with one verse or passage to be memorized each week. The verses chosen for this collection focus on 1) the character and worth of our great God, 2) battling against our fleshly desires, and 3) the hope of the Gospel.

Extended Memory Collection

The Extended Memory Collection is designed for those who wish to memorize longer passages of Scripture. Still structured as a five-year weekly memory program, this collection includes a set for Philippians, James, Romans 5-8, and the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7), plus an additional set of larger passages from various books of the Bible that are considered key to the life of faith.

Foundation Verses (Kids)

The Foundation Verses are 76 verses of foundational truth designed with toddlers and pre-readers in mind. Each verse includes a simple graphic that aids memorization and prompts the child to recall what they have memorized. Press About in the Foundation Verses section for more information.

Truth78 Curriculum Collection

This collection includes the memory verses of Truth78 Sunday School Curriculum, K-Grade 6. Each curriculum has its own set of verses listed by week (1-40). Purchase (as an In-App purchase) all seven curriculum titles (280 verses) for $0.99.

My Verses

This collection allows you to add verses to the app that are not part of the Fighter Verses Collections. You can assign a topic or create a "tag" for the verses you add. Tags allow you to associate any sort of label with a verse. The list of tags and the verses associated with them is accessible under Topical Index / Tags on the main menu.

The app connects to Crossway to retrieve ESV passages or Bible Gateway for all other translations. This requires an internet connection; however, once the verse is saved in My Verses, all added verses are available offline.

Review Memorized Verses

The verses you mark as memorized (by tapping Memorized?) are assigned to Review Memorized Verses.

The app will prompt you to review memorized verses if you choose Daily or Weekly in the Remind Me To Memorize section of Preferences.

The review process begins with you choosing the quiz style and starting level. You will then be prompted to review or skip the passage. The review counter will update for each review and the verse will not be prompted for review again until the duration of time for that time period has elapsed.

The review system is designed with the goal of moving a verse/passage from short-term to long-term memory. The review function is built on a four-level review system. Each “level" is made up two elements: 1) a period of time (daily, weekly, monthly, on-going) and 2) a number, which is the quantity of reviews needed for that period of time. As each goal is met, the app will promote the passage to the next level. In Preferences, you can choose the number of reviews for the first three levels.

View Schedule for Review

This screen shows you the status of each passage that has been marked as memorized. You will also see the last review, next review, and number of reviews needed to move each passage to the next level. You can also override the schedule and move a passage to a different level.

Current Verse

Current Verse provides a way to quickly navigate to the verse that is scheduled for the current week. The schedule can be configured in Preferences. The app defaults the start date and collection to sync with the FighterVerses.com website.

Search Verses

You can enter words or a reference to find verses in any collection except the Truth78 Curriculum Collection.

Topical Index / Tags

Verses are categorized by topics. You may select a topic from the Topical Index to view all verses listed under that topic. Tags are created by you in My Verses. From Topical Index / Tags you may view all verses you have given to a particular tag.

Current Verse Settings: Collection, Starting Set, Starting Date

Current Verse Settings allow you to change the starting point for the memorization schedule. The Fighter Verses are designed so that you memorize one new passage a week. This is customizable primarily to support churches or other groups that want to memorize together and follow the same schedule. However, there are advantages to following the default schedule (which has Set 1 starting on Jan 10, 2011). The new FighterVerses.com blog posts and the Fighter Verses Songs are always related to the current verse in the default schedule; if your schedule is ahead of the default schedule you may not be able to take advantage of these resources. This setting affects the behavior of Current Verse and the display of dates on the verse-list screen and on the "to recite on" date on the verse screen.

Remind Me To Memorize

If you choose Daily or Weekly, the app will subtly remind you to memorize or review by adding a number "1" red badge in the upper right corner of the app icon. If you choose Weekly, this functions more as an indicator that a new verse is now "current" and that you should look at it and begin memorizing. If you choose Daily, this is a reminder to continue working on the current verse and to review your memorized verses. If you have Remind Me To Review turned on (see below), that function replaces Remind Me To Memorize.

Remind Me To Review

When the slider is on (red), the app icon displays a number badge in the upper right corner which represents the number of passages currently due for review. If you only review some of those passages, the number in the badge changes to reflect the number of review passages remaining. When the slider is off (gray), the badge will not appear. Additionally, the first time you open the app each day (when this feature is turned on), a popup appears that shows the number of passages scheduled for review today. On that popup, you can tap Review Verses to review now or later to postpone your review. (Note: If you have this feature turned on, it supersedes the Remind Me To Memorize function.)

Number Of Reviews Needed To Advance

The default is 12 Daily Reviews to advance to Weekly Review, 12 Weekly Reviews to advance to Monthly Review, and 12 Monthly Reviews to advance to Ongoing Review (once every six months). The number of reviews needed to advance to the next level may be adjusted to as few as six or as many as 36.

Topics

This shows all other passages (Fighter Verses and My Verses) assigned to that topic. When adding verses to the My Verses Collection, you can choose one or more of the existing topics to apply to your verse, or create your own tag.

Memorized? (Mark as memorized)

The verses that you mark as memorized will be added to the Review Memorized Verses queue. In addition, all lists of verses will show a checkmark on the right side for any verses that are memorized; this allows you to quickly scan and see which verses you know and which ones you can still learn.

Quizzes

The quizzes help you learn verses through repetition and increasing difficulty. Most quizzes have five levels of difficulty. With each progressive level more words are taken away. At level five all words are taken away. There are six quiz styles. Each quiz style has different strengths.

Use Verse as Lock Screen

Creates an image that has a colored background with the verse text overlaid on it. By setting this image to be your "lock screen" you can ensure that you are constantly reminded of God's Word and reminded to memorize. This is a great way to keep yourself from forgetting or getting off track with your memorization goals.

For Apple devices, the image is not intended to be used as Apple "home screen," but only as the "lock screen." You may change color or change font before tapping Use As Lock Screen. You are encouraged to use different colors each time; this helps prevent the image from becoming so familiar that you stop noticing it.

For Android devices, Use Verse as Home Screen Widget.

Use Art as Lock Screen (ESV Only)

Many verses have artwork from The Verses Project that you may use for your lock screen.

Listen to the Verse

For ESV: The app connects to Crossway’s website and loops continually so that through repetition you can become familiar with the text. Listening to the audio is a great way to memorize when you can't look at the device while driving, walking, running, etc. Max McLean is the speaker. If the passage includes more than a single verse (for example, Phil 2:4-6) you have the option of listening to just a single verse at a time (like verse 4) instead of the entire passage. This feature requires an internet connection; however, after the audio is downloaded it will be saved for a while so it can be played back instantly even while offline.

For all other translations: You must first speak and record the passage in order to “listen to the verse."

Sing the Verse (ESV Only)

Songs have a special way of working themselves into our memory, so they make great aids for memorization. These songs are available in ESV for the Fighter Verses Collection and Set 5 of the Extended Memory Collection. This feature requires an internet connection; however after the song is downloaded it will be saved for a while so it can be played back instantly even while offline.

Song from TheVersesProject.com (ESV Only)

The Verses Project also records songs for many verses in the Fighter Verses Collection. These are not designed to be word-for-word with the passage.

Share the Verse

This feature allows you to select how you might share the verse with others: Text Message, Email, Facebook, Twitter, or copy to Clipboard. This feature may require an internet connection.

Read Whole Chapter

Understanding the context in which a verse is placed is extremely important in order to understand what the verse really means. Read Whole Chapter gives you quick and easy access to read the verse in its context so that you can gain a deeper understanding. This feature requires an internet connection.

FighterVerses.com Blog

A blog post is written to accompany the new Current Verse in the Fighter Verses Collection (following the default schedule). The blog post is a short commentary that provides deeper study into the meaning behind the verse and its application. The freshness of this commentary makes the blog a particularly attractive resource. Blogs are usually posted at the beginning of the week, but are not always available immediately with the new verse. Many blog posts from past years are also available. This feature requires an internet connection.

Read Commentary (Apple Devices Only)

Increase your understanding of the verse and the depth of meaning by studying a commentary. Commentary is provided by the PocketSword App which has a huge number of resources available for download. If you do not know where to start, we recommend the following resources in particular: John Calvin's Commentaries, Matthew Henry's Complete Bible Commentary, and John Gill's Exposition of the Whole Bible.

Search desiringGod.org

Searches desiringGod.org for sermons and other resources by Dr. John Piper that are related to the verse. This is a great way to go deeper in studying a verse. For some verses you may want to search for a more general verse reference to find matching resources (like just the book and chapter). This feature requires an internet connection.

Current Verse

Current Verse provides a way to quickly navigate to the Current Verse from within a verse.

Same Week in Extended

This allows you to quickly switch between the same week in the Fighter Verses Collection and the Extended Memory Collection so that you can memorize one passage a week in BOTH collections if you wish. This is useful for people who want a greater challenge than one passage a week.
